I'm Hannah and I live on the beautiful coast of North Cornwall. I work in oil paints on wood panels.

The darkness that often envelops my paintings are led by my own view of the world as a teenager; my inspiration being a 7 year off-grid life in the depths of the North Devon countryside. Living in an isolated old cottage without electricity, just by oil lamp and candlelight was a very different world from the modern one I was going to school in. The limited light, high contrast and feeling of undefined or conflicting time periods has definitely become an element of my artwork.

The subjects I find solace in and that have become consistently present in my work are card games, music and history. The connection between them that motivates me is emotional intimacy. I like to study subtleties of body language, emotion and gesture. I look for the hidden but universal stories of warmth, struggle, communication, and strength. By removing people from their modern surroundings and placing them into a darker setting, these characters raise and answer questions through composition, narrative, and symbolism without the context of time or place.

I work in series of paintings which I design using my own photographs. The lighting, the models and the props are planned but like to let the expressions, poses and the dynamic play out naturally. If I'm painting a group of people I usually build a composite image using several photos. I use oils and paint on wood panels in my attic studio in Bude on the North Cornwall coast. I'm available for exhibitions and commissions.

I  worked with Praevmedic in Switzerland for five years, regularly providing confidential portraits as part of an Ethical Health Program, supporting clients through mental health crisis.
