A BIT OF BACKGROUND

Hello, I'm Hannah. I live on the North Cornwall coast and I paint atmospheric, high contrast scenes and portraits.
My work reflects the unique perspective shaped by my rural childhood in the Westcountry, and teenage years living off-grid, where growing up by candlelight and a 'back to basics' lifestyle had a profound influence on my art.

I have been self employed as an artist since 2012, while raising a family. I exhibited at Castle Fine Art in Mayfair, as part of the London Invitational in 2022. I live and work in the middle of Bude, tucked away in my attic studio working almost exclusively in oil paints on wood panels.

THE ARTWORK
High contrast portraiture makes up a large proportion of my work, and I have previously worked with private clients in Zurich and Bern for five years using portraits in conjunction with therapy. I explore emotional intimacy and the subtlety of making personal connections. By removing people from their modern surroundings and placing them into a darker setting, these characters raise and answer questions through composition, narrative, and symbolism without the context of time or place.

Away from the portraiture, I still like to keep the high contrast; keeping compositions simple, intimate and authentic, allowing the imperfections and layers of the process to be part of the finished product. Wabi-sabi - the Japanese art of seeing the beauty in a naturally imperfect and transient world - is a philosophy that runs through my life and work.
